In 1833 Earl Gray, the Earl of "Howick Hall", as British Prime Minister lifted the East Indian Company's price monopoly in the tea trade with China. Long crossings from overseas to royal England were awaiting the tea, during which the musty and tar flavors could penetrate the leaves from the holds. The originally pure tea was already enriched in China with fine oils from bergamot, a citrus plant. This protective, additional scent is responsible for the popular name that stands for the finest English tea to this day.
